A centuries-old tradition
What is Panche Baja?
पञ्चे बाजा
Panche Baja (पञ्चे बाजा) is a traditional Nepali musical ensemble that has been an integral part of wedding celebrations and cultural ceremonies for centuries. The name 'Panche Baja' literally means 'five musical instruments,' though the ensemble typically includes nine different instruments played together to create a powerful, festive atmosphere.
In Nepali culture, no wedding is complete without the vibrant sounds of Panche Baja. It announces the arrival of the groom's procession (Janti), creates an atmosphere of celebration, and symbolizes joy, prosperity, and the beginning of a new journey.

The Nine Traditional Instruments
Each plays a unique role in the ensemble's powerful, harmonious sound.
Jhyamta (Cymbals)
Rhythm & Energy
Large brass cymbals that provide the rhythmic foundation and create the distinctive crashing sound that marks important moments in the procession.
Tyamko (Small Drum)
Main Beat
A small double-headed drum played with sticks, providing the main beat and tempo for the entire ensemble.
Dholki (Medium Drum)
Rhythm Variation
A barrel-shaped hand drum that adds depth and variation to the rhythm, played with both hands.
Damaha (Large Drum)
Bass & Announcement
The largest drum in the ensemble, producing deep bass sounds that can be heard from far distances, announcing the procession's arrival.
Narsingha (Horn)
Ceremonial Sound
A long S-shaped copper horn that produces loud, ceremonial sounds, often used in temples and religious ceremonies.
Shehnai (Wind Instrument)
Melody & Auspiciousness
A traditional oboe-like instrument that adds melodic elements and is considered auspicious for weddings.
Karnal (Trumpet)
Power & Majesty
A straight brass trumpet that adds power and majesty to the ensemble's sound.
